Musings from Lot 12
I have been working last night and tonight. We have a TV that we can watch when things are slow. Last night the two people I was working with, Inga and Natalie announced that 8pm we were going to watch American Idol. I had never seen this show and only had a vague idea what it was about. I thought that it was some kind of a talent show but I discovered that I was wrong. In true 21st Century American fashion this show is about celebrating loosers. I have always thought that if you watch a talent show then you try to pick a winner. Not this time. The trick is not to win, it is not to lose. You don't have to be the best merely not the worst. Not only did I get to watch the one hour show last night, tonight I had to watch them take 30 minutes to announce the loser! I know that this is supposed to be a musing but this is in fact a flat out rant. This to me is a stupid and cruel show as are so many of the "reality" shows that are about exposing people's basest nature and most nasty traits. This kind of TV I really don't like.

Couldn't agree more.

me thinks you're getting the show mixed up with the office pool, young fellow . . . viewers of the show do vote for the winner - who they like best . . . it's the office pool, on the other hand, that's voting for who they think the loser will be . . . contrary to your assertion that the trick is not to win, in fact it is . . . for the performers they must consistently do well in a number of different musical genres over over many weeks . . . the one who is consistently voted best wins . . . if you're looking for rant material, however, check out the hockey finals that are coming up soon and will last for weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks . . . whether it's some garage band singer with a dream of music contract or a kid on a rink dreaming of the NHL, they're all just looking for their 15 minutes of fame . . .
ps to previous post . . . I don't like or watch the show either . . . but then again I don't watch anything on TV regularly but the national news . . . :-)
I never watch that particular form of trash, though I have been known to follow other, ahem, series of that nature. The other night I flipped past it, though, and was struck dumb by the atrociousness of the performer named Kellie Pickler.
As if her name wasn't enough of a deterrant to the fame she seeks, she also sucked, big time.
Tragic.
